Inspiration

Where are the best places to picnic in Alsace?

With the first ice cream, the lazy afternoons in the garden and the open top sandals being retrieved from the back of the wardrobe, picnics offer the perfect activity for those fine sunny days. In Alsace, we like to get the most from our splendid landscapes and any opportunity to lay out a pretty tablecloth on the ground is more than welcome. Take along a decent baguette and some Alsatian cooked meats and you're already halfway there! Our tips for a successful picnic.

A gourmet picnic

In Alsace, good food is synonymous with quality and generosity, and picnicking is no exception to this proud tradition! Regional produce and seasonal products are the perfect addition to any picnic basket, much to the delight of food lovers everywhere. Throughout the region, growers and producers of traditional food products look forward to welcoming you in their farms and shops to share their love of fine food. An Alsatian style picnic also provides a great opportunity to discover the many local specialities including fruit, farm-produced yoghurt, the famous Munster cheese and finally the delicious cooked meat products, the pride of Alsatian gastronomy. And then you're all set for a hearty lunch on the grass!

You can appreciate time and space once again with this transport method which allows you to speed down the slopes or discover the region at a more leisurely pace depending on your preferences. Treat yourself to a discovery tour on a go as you please basis, at your own pace. Stop off whenever you like, to eat and to admire this enchanting setting.

Picnicking in town

Nature and culture combine marvellously in Alsace's towns. You can admire the museums, architecture and town life in general while enjoying a well-deserved break in each town's parks and gardens. Whether you opt for European Strasbourg, epicurean Colmar or creative Mulhouse, each town has its own leafy environments perfect for picnicking. Choose your favourite spots from among the Parc de l’Orangerie in Strasbourg and its adjoining bowling alley, Place Rapp in Colmar and its cool fountains or the Parc Salvator in Mulhouse, which every Thursday in July proposes musical, theatrical or artistic evening events followed by the screening of an open-air film.

A picnic with a wine grower

Sharing and contact are the watchwords during the picnics with independent winegrowers, a friendly gathering organised each May in Alsace. Are you bringing a picnic? Your host, one of the 100 independent winegrowers participating in this initiative, will bring along the wine (to be enjoyed in moderation but never without pleasure!). This is the ideal opportunity to discover the fascinating work of these growers, from production through to bottling. They'll also show you around the wine cellar and take you on a country walk through the vineyards to experience all the charms of our legendary Alsatian Wine Route and its picturesque little villages.

A picnic with an outstanding view

As everyone knows, exercise helps you work up an appetite. What could be better before an open-air lunch than a bracing walk through Alsace's superb natural environment? Take advantage of a walk in the Vosges to find "the" perfect spot from which to admire the amazing panoramic views. Whether from an unimpeded hilltop, a welcoming clearing in the forest or the shores of a mountain lake, there's no shortage of possibilities! When you've found somewhere with a great view, settle yourself down and enjoy! The landscape is there to be savoured in the same way as a delicious lunch laid out on the grass.
