Strasbourg - Bâle : l’Alsace en un tir d’aile !

At 200 kph discover Strasbourg, the capital of Europe, with its picturesque streets and alleys, Colmar, the capital of Alsace wines and Mulhouse, famous for its technical museums. On the same line, slower trains take you to stroll round the Grand Ried plain in Erstein and Benfeld, Sélestat redolent in humanist history or the Wine Route at Ribeauvillé and Rouffach.

Strasbourg - Woerth : Along the Rhine, in Goethe’s footsteps

Dotted along this rail link are the great locks and i sh ladder in Gambsheim, Sessenheim where Goethe used to stay, Rhineland forests and nature reserves such as Munchhausen, and Lauterbourg with the remains of fortii cations by Vauban.

Strasbourg-WissembourgStrasbourg - Wissembourg : Towns of the Decapole and picturesque villages

Heading along the northernmost rail link, you arrive at the gateway to the Palatinate. Two beautiful old towns, Haguenau and Wissembourg, once Free Towns under the Holy Roman Empire, can be visited along the way. Running parallel to the German border, constructions along the Maginot Line alternate with particularly well preserved traditional villages such as Hunspach and Seebach.

At the heart of Haguenau Forest, one of the largest woodlands in France, clay is mined to make the pottery cookware of Alsace in Betschdorf and Soul enheim. In Soul enheim, the famous kougelhopf cake moulds are i red together with baeckeofe roasters which you can discover in the village’s pottery workshops and shops.

Wissembourg-FleckensteinWissembourg - Fleckenstein : Castles and the Maginot Line

This seasonal line starts in the charming town of Wissembourg and takes you on a discovery tour to two sites near Lembach: to the Four à Chaux fortress, one of the largest constructions along the Maginot Line with 4 km of underground passages and 6 combat blocks, and to the impressive Fleckenstein Castle, half-carved into the rocks in the 12th to 15th century, with its fun trail called «the Puzzle Castle» and an area called «P’tit Fleck», a playground of sandstone and forest.

At the heart of a region known for its iron forges, renowned spa resort Niederbronnles-Bains was already on the map in Roman times. This key centre for rambling located at the hub of the Regional Nature Park of the Northern Vosges, is home to the only casino in Northern Alsace and an archaeology museum.

Haguenau-WoerthHaguenau - Woerth : a chapter in history

At the foot of the crest line of the Northern Vosges, the end of the Franco-Prussian War was played out at Woerth, the line’s terminus, where the museum of the Battle of 6th August 1870 retraces this historical episode. On your way there, the distinctive church of Walbourg stands out in the tree-covered hills, together with the spa centre and attractions park Didi’land at Morsbronn-les-Bains.

Strasbourg-SaarbruckenStrasbourg - Saarbrucken : in the land of glass and crystal

From Obermodern, the line runs along the Moder to Wingen-sur-Moder, which has long been specialised in the manufacture of glass and crystal. In summer 2011, a museum devoted to Lalique will open its doors on the former glass-making site of Hochberg. Continuing along the Eichel and then the Saar, the train takes us to Sarreguemines, a town renowned for its earthenware.

Strasbourg-SarrebourgStrasbourg - Sarrebourg : on the line of the TGV high-speed train

This rail links to Lorraine and the charming town of Saverne. On the edge of the Vosges mountains, you will i nd a large number of buildings and monuments in this town including the famous Rohan Château on the banks of the Marne-Rhine canal. Visit the rose garden, the botanical garden and the museums of Saverne, not forgetting the Haut-Barr castle and the Chappe’s telegraph tower.

Saverne-Sarre-UnionSaverne - Sarre Union : discovering an outstanding European destination

A former fortii ed shelter at Dossenheim-sur-Zinsel and Romanesque abbey church at Neuwiller-les-Saverne are along the way to La Petite Pierre, at the heart of the Regional Nature Park of the Northern Vosges. Built on a rocky outcrop surrounding the 13th-14th century castle, this tourist resort was once fortii ed by Vauban.

A winding route through the fertile land of the countryside surrounding Strasbourg takes you through the narrow pass of Kronthal, where the stones were quarried to build Strasbourg Cathedral, up to Wangenbourg-Engenthal. This mountain resort surrounded by peaks close to 1 000 m in altitude is a much-loved hiking centre.

Strasbourg-Saint-DiéStrasbourg - Saint-Dié : the pastoral Transvosgian line

Crossing the Wine Route at Molsheim, this railway line runs of to the West via the green Bruche Valley. Between the snow-capped heights of the Champ du Feu and the mythical peak of the Donon, it takes you to the Schirmeck Memorial (accessible by foot) and the former concentration camp Struthof (bus) before running down the slopes to Lorraine at Saâles, a small town renowned for its mountain farm market.

A historical high spot, the valley still bears traces of the Celtic, Roman and Mediaeval times, together with the architectural splendours of the Rhineland Renaissance.
