フランスの北東に位置し、ライン川とヴォージュ山脈にはさまれたアルザス。
ローマ時代よりヨーロッパの南北を結ぶ街道と東西を結ぶ街道の十字路として栄えてきた。国境を接するドイツとは鉄鉱石や石炭など豊富な地価資源をめぐって領有権争いを繰り広げ、数奇な歴史にはぐくまれた文化や風習は、フランスのなかでも独特なものだ。
ストラスブールやコルマールの木組みの家の続く街並みのなかを歩き、ドイツ語に近い独自の方言を耳にすれば、フランス的でありながらもドイツ的な、ドイツ的でありながらもフランス的な、そんなアルザス文化を強く感じるだろう。
ドイツでもソーセージの付け合わせとしておなじみの酢漬けのキャベツ「シュークルート」をはじめ、フォアグラ（アルザスはフランス随一のフォアグラの名産地である）などを使ったアルザス料理も忘れられない。
「アルザス・ワイン街道」のワインセラーで地ワインを試すのも楽しい。街道沿いの村々は絵のように美しく、屋根にコウノトリが巣をつくっている牧歌的な様子は、まさしく絵本の中に紛れ込んだかのようだ。
