The Orangery Park: an outstanding leafy setting in Strasbourg
Situated opposite the Council of Europe, the Orangery Park is the oldest and largest park in Strasbourg. Designed by Le Nôtre in the late 17th century, its 138 orange trees were added after the revolution, hence its current name. The lodge was built in 1804, in honour of Empress Joséphine who enjoyed strolling here with Napoleon. The park was subsequently re-landscaped to create a romantic English style garden, and later extended for the great industrial and craft exhibition of 1895. Today, the park is both a popular place to stroll for families, and a small zoo including monkeys, storks, lynx, flamingos and chamois. Your children will also love the farmyard area, which includes domestic animals. Covering a total surface area of 26 ha, with its centuries-old trees, its rose garden and its flowers, the Orangery Park is the finest in Strasbourg. Visitors will also appreciate the half-timbered house erected here for the Industrial Exhibition, which has today become a gourmet restaurant.
