Traditional villages: Wissembourg

A charming tourist destination

This town, (whose name means "White Castle") is a charming tourist destination in every sense of the word, boasting no fewer than 70 houses dating from before 1700, an elegant town hall and an impressive abbey church. The Church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul is the second-largest Gothic church in Alsace after Strasbourg Cathedral.

A former town of the Décapole

Despite its turbulent history, the town has remained remarkably intact. With envious neighbours a constant problem, the town was gradually fortified, and defended by its castles. In 1354 Wissembourg joined the Décapole and became an imperial town. As a result of its strategic position, it was the scene of intense fighting. During the Thirty Years War, it was taken and retaken before being burnt to the ground during the Dutch war. In 1870, bitter fighting raged here, to such an extent that a battle is today named after the town.
