Riquewihr: the grand old lady of the Alsatian vineyards
Nestling among the vineyards, the village of Riquewihr certainly lives up to its reputation as the grand old lady of the Alsatian wine producing area. Its houses dating from the 16th century offer some of the best examples of Alsatian architecture.
A picture postcard setting
With its fortified perimeter wall, its narrow cobbled streets and its superb half-timbered houses, the village offers visitors a delightful picture postcard setting. Everything seems to match just perfectly in this wonderfully preserved traditional village. Best visited during the week, preferably outside the holiday season to avoid the crowds, Riquewihr offers a wealth of treasures including charming courtyards, impressive stone buildings and flower-decked wells and fountains. The mediaeval old town is definitely worth a visit, not least of which for its many culinary delights! The nearby vineyards produce an excellent Riesling in addition to two well-known grands cru: the Sporen and the Schoenenbourg. A number of wine growers offer visits to their cellars, accompanied by wine tasting sessions.
