Towns: Strasbourg

A hotbed of economic and cultural dynamism

As both a European and the Alsatian capital, Strasbourg is also France's seventh largest city. Both an academic and tourist destination, this is a young and lively city, skilfully striking the right balance between historical heritage and economic dynamism. Lovers of monuments, fine restaurants and culture will definitely be in their element here. The sheer number and diversity of the tourist sites to be discovered means that visitors will need to draw up a shortlist of sites to be visited before arriving, based on their own particular tastes and interests.

Every district has its own distinctive identity

Like many other cities, Strasbourg includes a number of very different districts, each possessing its own specific identity, closely linked to its history and its inhabitants. Up until the 19th century, the town comprised only its ancient town centre, which explains the incredible richness and diversity of this area which is one of the most attractive and picturesque parts of town. Skirted by the river Ill, the town centre includes the main areas and monuments which have made Strasbourg so famous including its cathedral, the Kammerzell house or the Petite France district. Further to the east, we find the German District with its wide boulevards lined with majestic Haussmannian buildings. Here, we should mention in particular the Place de la République and its impressive monuments, the Palais Universitaire or the Central Post Office. One of Strasbourg's liveliest districts is without a doubt the Krutenau area, which is always popular with students. Its many bars, restaurants and shops make this a warm and friendly part of town, with a "village" atmosphere all its own. Finally, the residential areas (including among others the Orangerie and the Robertsau districts) are perfect for strolling. Here, visitors can discover the European institutions and some astonishing large private buildings.
