A town in the very heart of Alsace
Enjoying an ideal central geographical location in Alsace, Sélestat is the perfect place to stop off for anyone passing through the region between Mulhouse and Strasbourg. Although rather less "touristy" than the neighbouring towns, Sélestat's old town centre is perfect for strolling and admiring local history at first hand. Several historical periods are represented by the town's monuments: the 11th to the 15th centuries thanks to the churches of Saint Georges and Sainte Foy, the renaissance with the Ebersmunster building and the 17th and 18th centuries with the Andlau building.
The birthplace of Humanism… and of the Christmas tree!
Sélestat is also home to the incredible Humanist Library, one of the only libraries in Europe whose collections have never been broken up, and one of the oldest of its kind in Alsace. This is also a town synonymous with Christmas, as it is considered to be the birthplace of the tradition of the Christmas tree (the oldest written reference to this tree originates here, dating from 1521).
