An amazing view
The Hartmannswillerkopf, (which was renamed as "Vieil Armand" by French troops during the First World War) is located in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park. At an altitude of 956 m, this heavily wooded rocky spur offers outstanding views over the Cernay area, the Alsatian plain, the Black Forest, the Jura range, the Swiss Alps and part of the Vosges. Its fertile subsoil contains the mineral water sources tapped at Wattwiller, near the town of Cernay.
A memorial site
During the First World War, "Le Vieil Armand" was the scene of bloody combat which resulted in tens of thousands of victims. A crypt which includes the remains of 12,000 unknown soldiers has been built on the site, in addition to a national cemetery, in order to commemorate the tragic events which unfolded here. The sheer horror of the site's violent past stands in stark contrast to the area's outstanding natural beauty.
