A legendary site
Located to the south of the ruins of an ancient castle, at an altitude of 534 m, the Nideck waterfalls are part of a marvellously preserved natural site. They offer an outstanding site for hiking and rambling, which is extremely popular in summer thanks to its cool, leafy location. The legend of the giants of Nideck castle gives the site a special atmosphere all its own, which is further enhanced by its wild, wooded surroundings.
The waterfalls and the summit
The 25 m waterfall pours down from the top of a porphyry wall. The falls are home to an extremely ancient rock, the remainder of a mountain chain more than 560 million years old. For its part, the mountain peak provides an excellent view over the Bruche Valley. The site is easily accessible, thanks to the carefully laid out paths provided for this purpose. Although the waterfall is reduced to a trickle of water during the summer, this in no way detracts from the overall charm of this superbly romantic site.
