The many faces of the Munster Valley
Situated in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park, the Munster Valley offers a wealth of attractions guaranteed to delight nature, fine food, arts and crafts and sports lovers. The peaceful, leafy wooded setting offers a range of outstanding landscapes. The many farm-inns provide an opportunity for hikers and ramblers to enjoy a good meal and to appreciate the very best of the area's local products.
Munster cheese
Just like the washed-rind cheese which it produces, the Munster Valley has a very strong identity. This is perfectly demonstrated by the two Munster recipes, one inherited from the Protestant community and the other from the Catholics. Almost as if each community sought to underline its uniqueness through its cheese, the end result is extremely distinctive, with the "Protestant" Munster being somewhat less runny than its "Catholic" cousin.
The town of Munster
The town of Munster boasts a rich history. In times gone by, it was one of the 10 towns comprising the "Décapole" union. Largely destroyed by shelling during the First World War, it has nevertheless succeeded in retaining a unique charm which has earned it the titles of "Cité de villégiature" (Holiday town) and "Station Verte de Vacances" (Green Holiday Resort). In addition to its charming narrow streets, the town offers a number of exciting events.
Among these, the most famous is without a doubt the Bredlamarik, which provides an opportunity for visitors to taste the traditional Christmas biscuits.
