Mont Sainte Odile: a cultural and religious site
Situated at an altitude of 763 metres, for many centuries Mont Sainte Odile was the site of a large monastery. Today converted into a hotel, this religious site which was once dedicated to Saint Odile, (the patron saint of Alsace), is still visited by pilgrims. However, Mont Sainte Odile also attracts large numbers of nonreligious visitors, keen to enjoy the site's natural, wooded environment.
A lungful of cool, fresh air
The hill is topped by steep, pink sandstone cliffs which look out across the Alsatian plain, providing an outstanding view for visitors. Hikers and ramblers can also enjoy walking along the marked-out hiking trails, discovering among other things the "Pagan Wall" which was built around 1000 BC, the purpose of which is still hotly debated with the arguments put forward often being based more on legend than on historical facts.
