Outstanding sites: Le Grand Ballon

A breathtaking view

Also known as the Ballon de Guebwiller, the "Grand Ballon" is the high point of the Vosges mountain range. At an altitude of 1424 m, its peak offers a truly unique view over the Alsatian plain, the Black Forest and even over Austria, Liechtenstein and Mont Blanc. Easily accessible on foot from the Route des Crêtes (the "Peak Route"), it is also possible to walk around it for an extended hike. Here, visitors can discover attractive forested slopes with fir and beech trees, in addition to a lake.

A ski resort and memorial site

The Grand Ballon is generally the coldest and windiest point in Alsace. As a result, this is a very popular site during the winter, with the snow cover often being more than a metre thick. History lovers may also wish to pay their respects at the monument to the Alpine mountain infantry from the First World War, which was erected in 1927, stolen by the Nazis in 1940, and rebuilt in 1960 by Bouret.
