A unique setting
Officially listed as a nature reserve in 1989, Erstein's Rhineland Forest (known locally as "Sommerley") covers a total of 180 hectares. Crisscrossed by a dense network of former Rhine feeder streams, the area has its own hot, humid microclimate which explains its incredible biodiversity.
An incredibly diverse range of fauna and flora
Almost 300 plant species including 57 varieties of trees and shrubs are waiting to be discovered in this unique nature reserve. Oak, elm, ash, poplar, maple, dogwood and willow trees can be admired here, standing on a woodland carpet of pondweed, waterstarworts, reeds and yellow irises. You'll also find 29 species of vertebrate, 44 varieties of butterflies and dragonflies in addition to 78 bird species. Birdwatchers can make the acquaintance of the elegant middle-spotted woodpecker, easily recognisable thanks to its red cap and chequered plumage.
