The Strasbourg Fine Art Museum
Housed in the luxurious setting of the Palais des Rohans, the Strasbourg Fine Art Museum features a rich collection of works from various periods. Covering the Renaissance, Italian primitive art, baroque, classicism, naturalism or impressionism, this museum provides an excellent snapshot of the history of painting in Europe from the Middle Ages through to 1870. This mix of periods directly reflects the history of the museum itself. Successive curators have each added to the museum's stock, leaving their own personal touch each time, and bringing a certain degree of eclecticism to the collections. Today, the museum devotes pride of place to French painting from the 17th and 18th centuries, which continues to be underrepresented.
