An authentic open air village museum
Created in 1984, the Ecomusée d'Alsace comprises almost 70 authentic rural homes, dismantled in their original village where they were due for demolition, and rebuilt it here brick by brick. Over the years, and thanks to the contributions of thousands of volunteers and donors of historical items, the "Alsace Open Air Museum" has become one of the largest in Europe with its 100 hectares of village, fields and forests.
A journey back in time
The village's themes are working life in a village of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The homes, barns, fully operational workshops and exhibitions on display here provide a lively, first-hand way to discover rural life in Alsace at this period. A large number of volunteers are involved in the various entertainment features which really bring the trades of yesteryear to life for visitors, including blacksmiths, clog makers, potters, coopers and coalmen.
Visitors can discover the traditional know-how of these far-off days and taste some delicious local products. The village also has a number of vintage roundabouts including an indoor merry-go-round unique of its kind in Europe.
