The "Outre-Forêt"
Situated between Haguenau, Wissembourg and the Rhine, this micro-region has been heavily influenced by Protestant traditions. Its forests, hills and vales are home to many charming villages, castles and craft workshops. Pottery in particular is very popular here.
The "Alsace Bossue"
This area located between Sarre-Union and Saverne takes its name from its hilly landscape. Chiefly a rural area, it includes many orchards, shaded forests, and rivers brimming with fish. The numerous archaeological ruins and castles to be found here also bear witness to the areas rich historical past.
The "Kochersberg"
Located to the north-west of Strasbourg, the Kochersberg is often nicknamed "Alsace's wheat loft". Hops, cereals and tobacco dominate the landscape, which also offers visitors a wealth of bell-towers and keeps waiting to be admired.
The "Suisse d’Alsace"
Just a stone's throw from the Kochersberg, nestling between the vineyards and the mountain, La Suisse d’Alsace ("Alsatian Switzerland") offers a rich heritage including castles, fortifications, chapels, churches, temples and synagogues, not to mention a remarkable natural landscape. The area's many panoramic viewpoints delight hikers with views over the beautiful waterfalls and rocks.
The "Grand Ried"
This term refers to the area running alongside the Rhine between Colmar and Strasbourg. Comprising areas which were once flooded whenever the river burst its banks, the Grand Ried still includes a number of marshes, around which the remains of the former alluvial forest adds an extra touch of exoticism.
The "Pays Welche"
A region situated in the very heart of the Mid Vosges, around Orbey and Lapoutroie. The "Pays Welche" is something of an exception in Alsace, in as far as the Alsatian dialect has never been used here. Only a romance dialect similar to the Belgian Walloon and French languages are spoken here. The landscape of this micro-region comprises mountains and prairies surrounded by huge fir tree forests. Numerous milk, cheese and honey producers can still be found here.
The Florival
This "floral" term is used to refer to the Lauch Valley, which among other things includes the town of Guebwiller. Vineyards and mountains are the chief features of this region, which is home to the famous abbey of Murbach.
The Sundgau
Situated between Mulhouse and the Swiss border, this mainly rural area features a number of charming architectural and artistic heritage sites, giving it an authenticity and a character all its own. Here, you will find many pools and hills, between which Alsace's largest river wends its way through the region: this is the river Ill.
