The Castle of Spesbourg
The Castle of Spesbourg
Built in 1247 to control the valley and the neighbouring abbey, the castle has a large, square, 24 m high keep in addition to an inner courtyard. The castle boasts Gothic windows, majestic chimneys and a spacious aristocratic abode. The site features a level of refinement rarely seen in the 14th century. It was destroyed during the Thirty Years War, during which it was used as a refuge for local inhabitants. During recent years, it has undergone major bracing and reinforcement work.
