Discover some of Alsace's finest ruins
It was in the 13th century that the Lichtenberg family had this castle built on a hillside at an altitude of 400 m. The site was a strategic one when Vauban had it reinforced in order to make this one of the key points in his defensive system for the Northern Vosges area. The castle's history has been a turbulent one, from the storming of the fortress by Louis 14th's troops during the French annexation, through to its shelling in 1870 by the German Army. Despite this, the remains of this fortress are among the best in the region, and include a Gothic-styled 16th century chapel. The marble mausoleum is one of the finest from the Renaissance period in Alsace. A monumental staircase will take you to the top of the towers. From here, you can see the spire of Strasbourg Cathedral.
