Castles: The Castle of Hohlandsbourg

Alsace's largest fortified castle

Built on a mountaintop, the Hohlandsbourg offers a magnificent 360° view across the Alsatian plains and the Vosges range. In clear weather, you can even see the spire of Strasbourg Cathedral and the Bernese Alps. This garrison castle which was built in the 13th century was the seat of an aristocratic estate belonging to the Habsburg family. At 100 m in length and 60 m in width, this is Alsace's largest fortified castle. The remains of the upper dwelling, also known as the "Oberschloss" with the base of a 13th century semicircular tower can still be admired today.

A site dedicated to culture, dialogue and sharing

During recent years, the castle has been the centrepiece of a huge restoration project. It provides an excellent example of the way in which Alsatian military architecture developed up to the Thirty Years War, during which it was reduced to ruins. Once a fortress, and today a site dedicated to culture, dialogue and sharing, a large number of events are held here from Easter through to November 11, in a marvellous natural setting.
