Alsace's most frequently visited unrestored castle
A moving and impressive building, the Castle of Fleckenstein is built on a 100 m long rocky spur at an altitude of 338 m. The castle ruins occupy a remarkable site, from where visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view across the Sauer Valley. Built in the 12th century in what is today the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park, the Castle of Fleckenstein was once an impenetrable fortress. Its military purpose was both to control one of the roads linking Alsace to Lorraine and also to protect Haguenau. It survived for four centuries before being destroyed in 1680 by French troops. Despite this, the square tower and the cave rooms remain in good condition. Today, this is Alsace's most widely visited ruin, attracting almost 100,000 visitors per year.
