A dynamic and ecological town

Surrounded by forests, Freiburg offers an outstanding setting which marvellously combines a leafy green environment with attractive urban planning. However, the town's attraction for tourists is not simply limited to its ecological credentials. Freiburg is also a culturally dynamic town thanks among other things to its many students, not to mention the huge range of shops, cafes and restaurants. Numerous historical monuments make strolling in the town a real pleasure. The Gothic-styled red sandstone cathedral, the historical merchant's house (a Renaissance building) and the former town hall with its painted facade are among the town's most interesting monuments. The streets of the old town are crisscrossed by small streams referred to as "Bächle" by local people. According to local legend, anyone who falls in one of the streams will marry a man or woman from Freiburg.
