A crossroads between three countries
Situated in an area known as the "Three Borders Region" (France, Switzerland and Germany), the town of Basel is often considered as a leading cultural crossroads. With more than 166,000 inhabitants, it has all the advantages of a medium-sized town in terms of attractiveness and quality of life, combined with those of a major city thanks to the sheer diversity of its cultural activities and districts. The town's architecture marvellously reflects its spirit. The well-preserved old town coexists with the more modern buildings found in the other districts, designed by well-known architects. The town is home to more than 30 museums, not to mention a wealth of restaurants and nightlife attractions. Basel's flagship event is without a doubt its famous carnival which begins on the Monday immediately following Ash Wednesday, at four o'clock in the morning. Over the space of three days, Basel's streets are plunged into darkness as tens of thousands of masked and costumed flute players and drummers pass by.
